LIRA DCC Inspect Detention Centres
The Lira District Coordination Committee

The Lira District Coordination Committee (DCC) headed by the Chief Magistrate HW Abiti Samson Loum on Monday April 29, 2024 carried out a series of inspections of different detention centres within Lira City.

The team began by visiting Lira Main Prison and Lira Women's Prison. They then proceeded to Lira City Central Police Station and Lira City West Police Station.

The main purpose of the visits was to acquaint themselves with the conditions of the said centres, adherence to the acceptable human rights standards and the general welfare of the holding cells.

The team was grateful to the efforts being made by the officers in charge of the centres. They were however disappointed to find juveniles being mixed with adults in some Police cells.

The CM was accompanied by the Resident City Commissioner, Mr Lawrence Egole, all the Magistrates Grade One of Lira (HW Wamimbi Jonathan, HW Kampire Sylvie and HW Nasasira Alison).

Also present was the Resident Chief State Attorney Lira, the Human Rights Officer of UHRC Lira, Justice for Children Coordinator, Community Service Coordinator and Probation Officer Lira.
